In the environment, pollutants occur in multiple combinations rather than individually.
Assessing their combined effects on organisms and using this information to evaluate the potential risks for man and the environment are the tasks of Biomonitoring.

Biomonitoring - monitoring and assessing the environment using organisms.

Sensitive organisms directly respond to environmental stresses caused by pollutants. Their responses, which may be visible or easily recordable changes, reflect the intensity of pollutant impact - including potential interactions among various pollutants and other environmental factors.

Other groups of monitoring organisms are able to accumulate environmental pollutants very efficiently. Their pollutant loads are determined by highly sensitive analytical methods in the laboratory. In this way they can reveal information about the possible risks for man's health (via pollution of the food chain) and for the environment.

Avoiding deleterious effects of pollution is the topmost goal in environmental protection: Biomonitoring allows us to make direct statements on pollutant effects to the public which are conclusive and illustrative even for laymen.
